+Jericoacoara is one of the three most visited national parks in Brazil. “Vila de Jericoacoara” is part of Jijoca de Jericoacoara, in the state of Ceará, in Northeastern Brazil. The village is located approximately 445.3 km from Teresina (PI), 213 km from Parnaíba (PI), 178.3 km from Barra Grande (PI), 300 km from Fortaleza (CE), and around 580 km from São Luís (MA). The destination offers countless tourist attractions and is one of the main highlights of the Route of Emotions, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

Traveling from Jijoca to Vila de Jericoacoara offers a stunning landscape of dunes. Arriving in the village is extremely rewarding and captivates everyone. As a traditional fishing village, the destination conveys tranquility and warmth. Its natural beauty can be appreciated through a simple walk along Malhada Beach, watching the breathtaking sunset from Sunset Dune, or through tours to famous attractions such as Pedra Furada, Buraco Azul, Lagoa do Paraíso, Mangue Seco, and the Lazy Tree.

Sustainable Tourism Fee:

If you are planning to visit Jericoacoara, it is important to remember the Sustainable Tourism Fee of R$ 30,00 charged per visitor for stays of up to seven days. Even if you are visiting just for the day, you must pay the fee. To pay it, access the website of the Municipality of Jericoacoara, https://www.jijocadejericoacoara.ce.gov.br/, click on the “Services” tab, then on “Tourism Fee.” Choose your preferred language, generate the fee, and fill in the required information. At the end of the process, print the payment slip and complete the payment.

According to Article 4 of Decree No. 044/2017, the following are exempt from the fee:

    • People with disabilities (upon presentation of a medical report and official ID);

    • Children up to 12 years old (with birth certificate or ID);

    • Seniors above 60 (with official ID);

    • Residents of Jijoca de Jericoacoara (with ID and proof of address);

    • Workers of Vila de Jericoacoara (with ID and proof of employment).

How to Get There

By Plane:                                                           

The closest airport to Jericoacoara is located in the neighboring municipality of Cruz–CE.

    • Jericoacoara Airport (JJD) – Located in Cruz, about 30 km from the village.

Another possible option is to travel to Parnaíba Airport (PI) and rent a car, take a transfer, or catch a bus to Jericoacoara.

Parnaíba Airport (PHB) – Located 213 km from Jericoacoara.

By Car:

If you are in Parnaíba or Barra Grande, you can rent a car from Localiza or request a transfer through local tourism agencies. Traveling with your own car is also an option, but remember that upon arriving in Jijoca, you must use paid parking. Another alternative is taking a taxi, which may cost approximately R$600,00, depending on the departure point. For those in Barra Grande, the best option is a transfer, as it offers comfort, speed, and good value for money.

Important Notes for Visitors Arriving in Jijoca by Car:

    • Cars (owned or rented) must remain in a paid parking lot in Jijoca;

    • From Jijoca to the village, access is by 4×4 vehicles or open trucks (“jardineiras”), and prices may vary depending on the number of passengers.


By Bus:

There are the following ways to reach Jijoca de Jericoacoara by bus:

Fortaleza – Jijoca de Jericoacoara
The company Expresso Guanabara operates direct routes from the João Thomé Bus Station in Fortaleza to Jijoca. Prices range from R$ 46 to R$ 94, depending on schedule and class. The trip takes approximately 6 hours and 3 minutes to 7 hours. For more information, visit the company’s website or call 0800 728 1992 (available only for calls made within Brazil).

Parnaíba – Jijoca de Jericoacoara
From Parnaíba (PI), you can also travel by Expresso Guanabara.  Tickets cost R$ 50.00 to R$ 62.76, with a travel time of about 3h45. For more information, visit the company’s website or call 0800 728 1992.

After arriving in Jijoca, you must take a transfer to the village (private or shared), with prices varying according to the number of passengers.

What to Do

Jericoacoara is colorful, welcoming, and surrounded by breathtaking coastal scenery. Exploring its surroundings is essential. The most popular attractions among visitors are:

    • Sunset Dune (Duna do Pôr do Sol)

    • Pedra Furada

    • Lagoa do Paraíso

    • Buraco Azul

Sunset Dune is located on Malhada Beach, very close to the village, and offers an unforgettable view at the end of the day. Another budget-friendly tour is Pedra Furada, where visitors can reach the attraction by following a trail when the tide is low, or go by buggy. Lagoa do Paraíso is located about 15 km from the Vila, and the route crosses dunes and dirt roads. Those who want to visit the Buraco Azul will need a transfer, as it is a remote location and sits approximately 20 km from Vila de Jericoacoara. To visit Lagoa do Paraíso and Buraco Azul, the best option is to book a package with companies specialized in these tours, which helps keep the cost affordable.
