The Parnaíba River Delta is located between the states of Maranhão and Piauí, with the city of Parnaíba serving as its main gateway. The Delta is part of the integrated tourist route Rota das Emoções, which connects three iconic destinations: Lençóis Maranhenses, the Parnaíba River Delta, and Jericoacoara. The region features a rich and diverse ecosystem, including coastal plateaus, sandbanks, mangroves, riparian floodplain forests, and vegetation growing over dunes.
The Parnaíba River Delta is the only open-sea delta in the Americas and covers an area of approximately 2,700 km², spanning two states — about 35% of the area lies in Piauí, while the remainder is in Maranhão. Visitors will encounter dunes, rivers, beaches, mangroves, wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes, making it an ideal destination for nature contemplation and outdoor experiences.
The best time to visit the region is between May and August, when rainfall is lower and the lagoons are full and crystal clear. December and January are also good months to visit, as rainfall during this period is usually not constant.
